Statistics from the Department of Justice prove that the rise of gun ownership in America has accompanied a decline in homicide rates. Our country is factually safer as more people chose to own firearms as weapons of self-defense. Although tragic events such as Columbine and the Sandy Hook shootings occurred, gun control efforts likely would not have prevented them. These events involved criminal-minded people who were willing to break many laws regardless of the consequences, just like the brothers responsible for the Boston bombings. Tragic events will never be fully preventable, but it is absolutely necessary to protect our right to defend ourselves with the use of a gun, especially in the midst of these situations.
