
A less talked about unintended consequence of such bans is that with magazine capacity restricted, prospective gun buyers have less incentive to choose small calibers, which by simple virtue of using smaller cartridges, can more practically use magazines with capacities of 15, 20, or 30 or more rounds. Instead, it makes sense to choose larger, and arguably deadlier, calibers. Some have, in fact, made a compelling case for the argument that the renaissance in popularity of the venerable M1911 pistol, in .45 ACP, was in large part helped along by the 1994 "assault weapons" ban, and its 10-round magazine capacity limit, which made 9mm handguns less attractive.
