What percentage of Mexican 'crime guns' are 'gunwalked' by Obama administration?

Now, compare that total to the 2-3,000 guns (that we know of so far) that the BATFE has "walked" to Mexico--in two years or less--and one starts to see that the BATFE could be looked at as one of the leading gun suppliers to the Mexican narco-thugs.

Now why would they do that, do you suppose? "Never let a serious crisis go to waste," Rahm? [More]

Obstruct and evade: Administration running out of tricks to duck 'Gunwalker'

Enough with the games, administration officials. Every attempt to obstruct and evade the investigation merely delays the inevitable, and compounds your guilt. Congressman Issa can subpoena documents and witnesses nearly at will, and now that he has become heavily involved, he seems to have that will. If formal hearings, with senior administration officials (very senior, perhaps) treated as hostile witnesses are the only way the truth will get out, the truth will still get out.

President Obama would do well to remember that it was not the Watergate break-in itself that undid Nixon--it was the cover-up afterward. Then again, Watergate didn't kill anyone. [More]

Anti-gun forces to hold press conference today in Chicago

As has recently been pointed out here before, the momentum behind defensive handgun carry in Illinois is stronger than it has ever been in the past, with Illinois HB 148, the "Family and Personal Protection Act," having a real chance of passage. That would be a nightmare not only for Illinois anti-gun groups (which were already suffering from dwindling funding), but for national "gun control" groups as well. Illinois, as one of only two states with no provision for legal concealed carry for private citizens (and the only state to ban both open and concealed carry), is considered a "gun control" stronghold (and the Brady Campaign has still felt the need to focus its efforts in the state, largely writing others off). Passage of the Family and Personal Protection Act would, in other words, go a long way toward driving a much-needed oaken stake through the heart of the forcible citizen disarmament lobby, nationwide. 'Project Gunwalker' now definitively traced to near top of Justice Department

Are officials very near (or at?) the top of this administration guilty not only of facilitating the illegal trafficking of thousands of guns to Mexico, some of which have been used to kill perhaps hundreds of Mexican citizens and at least one American law enforcement officer, but also of trying to cover the atrocity up; or are they "merely" guilty of letting their underlings run (lethally) wild, without their knowledge? Kickoff (so to speak) is 10 AM. As the Missouri Sport Shooting Association newsletter suggests. gun rights advocates in Missouri have reason to be energized. Does Obama have too many 'moving parts' to get handle on 'Project Gunwalker'?

That means that Holder has had more than seven weeks to sort through all the administration's "moving parts," and find out who authorized "Operation Fast and Furious." Remember also that the Inspector General to whom Obama refers works for the Department of Justice--the very same department that seems to be up to its eyeballs in the scandal, which is why Sen. Grassley has been pressing for an independent investigation. [More]

CSGV finds another 'insurrectionist'--this one in Congress

Um . . . what's the problem again? Saying that infringements on that which the Constitution clearly states shall not be infringed would violate the very basis for the government's legitimacy, thus nullifying any obligation on the people's part to obey that government? That would only be "insurrectionary" if it's "seditious" to demand that the government be contrained by the short leash of the Constitution. Actually, come to think of it, CSGV's position would seem to be that such a demand is indeed "insurrectionary." [More]

Just how big is 'Project Gunwalker'?

The Department of Justice encompasses not only the BATFE, but also the U.S. Marshals Service, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and the U.S. Attorneys--and now we see that all those agencies were involved. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), of which ICE is one part, is of course a Cabinet-level department, entirely separate from the Department of Justice. Keep in mind that when the Brady Campaign finally acknowledged "Gunwalker," their President Paul Helmke tried to blame the fiasco on BATFE's not having had a permanent director since 2006 . . . Savagely beaten Illinois woman pleads for right to defend herself

The title of this article is not entirely accurate, constrained as it is by Examiner's character limit for titles. Mary Shepard's plea was not really for the right to defend herself--self-defense is a fundamental human right--no pleading necessary. What she is asking the state for--what the citizens of Illinois must demand--is recognition of that fundamental human right. There is room, really, for only two stances on this issue. One can either stand with the Mary Shepards of Illinois, and for legal defensive firearm carry; or with the brutal thugs, and those who support mandated defenselessness for their victims. [More]

CSGV should change name to 'Coalition to Kill Dissenters'

CSGV's Twitter feed is probably not Horwitz's work. Presumably, that's handled by Ladd Everitt, their Minister of Truth . . . er, I mean their Director of Communications (and let's be fair here, and not make too much of Ladd's resemblance to Jared Loughner--for all we know, Everitt could have chosen that look first, and it was a case of Loughner emulating him, rather than the other way around). Clearly, they are commendably united in their support for governmental violence. [More]

Can the 'Fix Gun Checks Act' prevent violence? Can it respect liberty?

It's as if Obama read through S. 436, and extracted every talking point that could be applied to the alleged shooter. The forcible citizen disarmament lobby is no doubt unhappy that Loughner didn't make his firearm purchase at a gun show, thus leaving Obama with no hook for the "gun show loophole" language in the bill. In that, the President has shown more integrity and restraint than some. Colin "The Alchemist" Goddard has made the "loophole" his signature issue (at least until the progress of legislation to end colleges' status as "gun-free" zones has forced him to play defense), despite the shooting to which he owes his fame (and his job) having been committed with guns not bought at a gun show. It cannot realistically be doubted that Obama would dearly love to sign Sen. Chuck Schumer's S. 436 (or Congresswoman Carolyn "What's a Barrel Shroud?" In other words, don't look for Obama to"seek agreement" with regard to the BATFE's rampant evil. That vile misconduct, indeed, looks to have been a major tool by which Obama had hoped to secure the American people's agreement. [More]

Brady Campaign says permanent BATFE director would have stopped 'Gunwalker'

Oh? Acting Director Kenneth Melson has so little power that he can't direct the bureau to . . . not pressure gun dealers into going ahead with obvious "straw sales," against the dealers' better judgment? What, then, are the responsibilities and powers of an acting director? What, indeed, is the purpose of an acting director, if not to . . . act as director? There would not have been a "Project Gunwalker," without Melson's authorization, and if he were somehow powerless to stop it, that would mean that it was forced on him, against his will, from higher up in the Department of Justice (and there can be no realistic doubt that the operation was known, and at the very least tacitly approved, further up in that department), by people who would outrank a permanent director, as well. Motive behind 'Project Gunwalker' needs closer look

The "we're incompetent (Underpants Gnomes-incompetent)" excuse should be pretty humiliating for anyone involved, but it does make a certain kind of sense that they would prefer it to admitting that they have been trading Mexican (and some American) lives for more infringements on that which shall not be infringed. That excuse would probably also serve to help insulate some of the higher level officials--perhaps even an elected official who, on April 16, 2009 said, "More than 90 percent of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United States." FOID data publication has nothing to do with government accountability

The far more fundamental issue, though, is of course that this information is not legitimately the government's to "account for." The Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that the right to keep and bear arms is fundamental, and explicitly guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. That right's licensure, then, has no legitimacy whatsoever. To keep government "in check," what needs to be done is not to require it to reveal to whom it has granted "permission" to own firearms, but to strip it of the power to either grant or deny that permission. Sipsey Street Irregulars' Mike Vanderboegh, who along with National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea, broke the "Project Gunwalker" story, recently offered a sinister hypothesis:

The HB 7/SB 27 legislation has a laudable goal, and Attorney General Madigan (who supported the continuation of Chicago's handgun ban in the McDonald case, and whose father, Michael Madigan, is the Speaker of the House in the Illinois state legislature, and a longtime, fervent advocate of "gun control") has clearly decided to make such legislation necessary. On the other hand, perhaps it's past time to aim much higher. Perhaps, indeed, it's time to acknowledge the sordid truth of where the FOID came from, and of what the real motivations behind implementing it were.
