The latest application of this strategy might well be just across the river in Illinois, where state Representative Harry Osterman's HB 6123 would make it a felony (a Class 1 felony) "to knowingly sell or give a firearm to a person who is a street gang member." This could put gun rights advocates in something of a tough spot, at least with regard to the court of public opinion.
