In other words, even if, for the sake of argument, we were to accept the underpants gnome theory, and believe that the objective really was to somehow "bring down a drug cartel," those behind this scheme could hardly have failed to realize that one result of it would be the strengthening of the gun prohibitionists' hand. Just as the operation was approved with full prior knowledge of the inevitable growth of the body count in Mexico, one other entirely predictable "side effect" of the operation would be more and louder calls for infringements on that which shall not be infringed.
