We are, in other words, to believe that the supreme law of the land is to be taken figuratively? What point could there be to a Constitution in which every guarantee of the people's rights can be dismissed as not really meaning what it says? What would be to stop the government from claiming, for example, that the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of speech is a figure of, well . . . speech?
As Americans, we will not be limited to only the rights that meet the approval of someone who believes that the Constitution is no more than a suggestion to the government about the limits on its power. [More]
