Conn. can try to confiscate guns, magazines, but threatened owners have options

Still, all need not be lost for the last group--the obedient, but tardy, attempted registrants. The letter might be intimidating, but just how much does Connecticut have with which to back it up? If the recipients of the letter do nothing, and the state decides to push the issue, what can they do? How many judges would be willing to issue search warrants?

The "illegal" owners, after all, could have chosen any of the first three of the four offered choices, to get rid of (or disable) the evil guns/magazines, and the state would have no idea. For all the state knows, that's exactly what they did. In other words, it is difficult to see how this could be anything more than another bluff on Connecticut's part, and if the recipients of the letter choose to call that bluff, just as the scores of thousands of those who never tried to register did, the confiscationists would seemingly have hit a brick wall.

An article of faith among the gun ban zealots is the notion that Americans are rapidly becoming disenchanted with firearms, and are instead embracing restrictive gun laws. 'Assault weapons,' registration, and the lessons of Connecticut

It is only through defiance of evil, unjust, illegitimate laws that one can avoid becoming a victim of them. This is a lesson for the entire country. If tens of thousands of citizens of one state can face the government down over a state gun ban and registration scheme, tens of millions of Americans can do the same in a face-off with the federal government, over an analogous law at that level. Missouri Senate's '2nd Amendment Preservation Act' stripped of poison pill

As for why the NRA might oppose such legislation, perhaps it's simple tactical concerns--perhaps they don't see such laws ever surviving the inevitable federal court fight, and thus don't want the gun rights movement burning political capital for nothing--the "Vulcan chess masters" explanation. Somewhat similar thinking was apparently at the heart of their original obstruction of what eventually became the District of Columbia v. Heller case. On the other hand, perhaps they see more moneymaking potential in fighting the gun rights war, than in winning it.

IL state senator would require federal manufacturing license to print gun parts

What, one cannot help but wonder, does Silverstein hope to stop with such a law? Presumably, he does not really believe that someone who wants to wreak death and carnage with a gun, but can acquire one only by exploiting the "loophole" of printing it (a very dubious scenario all by itself) will not simply print the gun in secret, just because that's now illegal. Of course not, because the bill isn't intended to thwart a single shooting. It's intended only to bolster the fantasy of government control of private firearm ownership.

Senator Durbin wants to mandate 1-round limit on magazines

It seems most likely that Durbin said "mutli-round" in order to avoid being pinned down to any specific number. The intended implication was some nebulous "high" number (at most 11, but "preferably" lower). That way, if federal legislation imposing a (for example) seven-round limit is introduced, he can claim that's what he was for all along.

Then again, perhaps he is simply clueless about that which he presumes to regulate. As excuses go, though, that one would be pretty lame. [More]

Senate version of Missouri 2nd Amnd. Preservation Act amended into step backward

In other words, there is a very real possibility that in the end, the only part of the law left standing will be the part imposing the risk of criminal penalties on the victims of theft, and keep in mind that one segment of the population will be immune to this law, because in Haynes v. United States, the Supreme Court found that the Fifth Amendment's protection from any requirement to incriminate oneself means that a convicted felon, or anyone else prohibited by law from possessing firearms, cannot be punished for failing to tell the police about any guns he had possessed. The law, then, would not only target crime victims, it would exempt those crime victims who are felons.

Holder wants felons' voting rights restored, wants them to remain defenseless

For those not familiar, the Sammy "The Bull" reference was about a former Mafia enforcer Sammy Gravano, who was very much in favor of "gun control," for precisely that reason. As quoted by Gun Owners of America, from a 1999 interview in Vanity Fair:

'Progressive' writer uses Hoffman death to equate gun makers to heroin dealers

Granted, one can debate whether it should be legal for people to poison their bodies with heroin, and for other people to supply them with that poison, and indeed, this correspondent strongly believes that the "War on Drugs" is an immoral, unconstitutional, and ultimately fruitless endeavor. The fact remains, though, that rightly or not, heroin is illegal, and guns (rightly) are not (outraged "progressive" sensibilities notwithstanding), and to treat the trade in one similarly to trade in the other is to make a mockery of the entire rule of law.

By "could endanger the safety and welfare of children," he clearly means laws and amendments that protect the fundamental human right of the individual to keep and bear arms. In other words, his amendment would "supersede" those, in order to mandate a "government monopoly on force" (reminiscent of every genocidal tyranny in history), and just for good measure, wipe out the Constitutional guarantee of equal protection for all under the Constitution--all "for the children."

Conn. 'assault weapon' court ruling admits their 'common use,' doesn't care

It is unfortunate that in writing the Heller opinion, Justice Scalia neglected to mention that semi-automatic, detachable magazine-fed rifles with pistol grips, barrel shrouds and flash suppressors have long been considered by the American people to be the quintessential anti-tyranny weapon. As said before, the unfortunate court ruling is just the beginning of the "long legal war" over this legislative abomination. In the meantime, Connecticut gun owners should continue to defy it. The "legal war" might, after all, escalate to the kind of war in which the quintessential "regime change rifle" is a vital piece of equipment. [More]
