Gun owners should brace for onslaught of 'smart gun' idiocy

A "smart gun" mandate would require gun buyers to spend an exorbitant premium for technology that makes one's gun less likely to fire when the trigger is pulled. That's what the technology is designed to do, when it works perfectly (something it cannot be expected to do). That's a deal breaker even before one considers the idea of the government having an "Off" switch for the Second Amendment. [More]

That's today's St. Louis Gun Rights Examiner. Please give it a look, and tell a friend--and Facebook "likes" and "shares" are hugely appreciated.

Obviously, pro-gun rights groups (NRA, GOA) will oppose this technology on libertarian grounds. But the Violence Policy Center has also criticized "smart gun" technology. They fear that, if perfected, it would encourage gun ownership, because it would make guns seem safer.

Yeah--I've seen VPC's objection. Strikes me as rather convoluted reasoning, and I'll still be surprised if they take any kind of active role in opposing any "smart gun" mandate.

Maybe the VPC will oppose seat belts and air bags, because they might encourage reckless driving. And I don't know if the NRA and other gun rights organizations will oppose R&D into the technology itself, but they probably will (and should) oppose laws that make it mandatory.
