Money no object for Mexican drug cartels shopping for guns

The gold-plated, diamond-encrusted guns show that they can--and cheerfully do--spend any amount of money on their guns. According to the first article linked to above, Secretary of State Clinton estimated last year that the Mexican drug cartels take in $25 billion a year--and many consider that to be a low-ball figure (and by a wide margin).

Does anyone seriously believe that any laws can be put in place, that can't be easily circumvented with that kind of money? Corruption in the Mexican government is so rampant that the police and military often confronte one another. The ranks of cartel gunmen are filled with deserters from the Mexican Army--even if none take their weapons with them, for the cartels to bribe the military officers and government officials who do control the weapons is a small matter.
