And how convenient for him to oppose the infringement almost certain to fail, while supporting the one most likely to pass.

If seeking mental health care comes to be seen as grounds for disarmament, more and more cops and military personnel--you know, the "Only Ones" we should trust with guns--will be reluctant to seek help for their Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Illinois another step toward legal armed self-defense; Politburo strikes back

This leaves Illinois' forcible citizen disarmament fanatics with two choices. They could appeal the case to the United States Supreme Court (with no guarantee that SCOTUS would take the case, and with the risk that they would lose there, as well, possibly jeopardizing strict firearms carry laws in other states). Or they could try to pass a brutally restrictive carry law, which would be basically a de facto ban, despite theoretically permitting defensive firearm carry.

That second option appears to be the one that Illinois Speaker of the Politburo . . . er, I mean House Mike Madigan has chosen (although a U.S. Supreme Court appeal is still possible). Essential Liberty is essential reading

David beat me to the punch in writing an Examiner review for Rob Olive's Essential Liberty, so I'll just put a quick word up here.

Consider it required reading for anyone who knows how fragile liberty is, and how worthy it is of fighting for. It is, indeed, worth dying for, and that implies, of course, that it is worth killing for.

And that, come to think of it, perhaps makes this book even more required reading for those who would undermine our liberty.

Anyway, if you liked John Ross's Unintended Consequences, the Matthew Bracken Enemies Foreign and Domestic trilogy, or are impatiently waiting for Mike Vanderboegh's Absolved book to be published in its entirety, you will no doubt find Essential Liberty impossible to put down.

And how about a look at what Obama apparently does not believe the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary atrocity "deserve a vote" on? About Feinstein's hopes to ban 'bump fire' stocks

Friday, we talked about Senator Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA) wish to ban "bump fire" stocks. As she told the Associated Press:

Since the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban expired, we have seen a rapid rate of technological improvements in assault weapons, and that concerns me," Feinstein, a California Democrat, said in an email response to questions from The Associated Press.

"This replacement shoulder stock turns a semi-automatic rifle into a weapon that can fire at a rate of 400 to 800 rounds per minute," she said. Noting the strong existing federal regulation of machine guns, she added, "I strongly believe that devices allowing shooters to fire at similar rates should also be outlawed."

Well, just as 3-D printing and other fabrication techniques are rapidly making gun bans irrelevant (and doing the same thing even more quickly to magazine bans), a homemade bump fire stock is hardly an advanced engineering project:

If 'assault weapon' ban fails, 'bump fire' stocks may be consolation prize

Nevertheless, when she announced her "assault weapon" ban bill, she promised to ban such stocks, as one of the "improvements" over her 1994 ban:

• Banning dangerous aftermarket modifications and workarounds.
  • Bump or slide fire stocks, which are modified stocks that enable semi-automatic weapons to fire at rates similar to fully automatic machine guns.

That language seems not to have survived in the actual text of Feinstein's S. 150, but that does not mean she has lost her passion to protect America from the plague of bump fire stocks (the next victim of "bump fire violence" will apparently be the first, but don't count on that making any difference to Feinstein), as illustrated in an Associated Press article yesterday . . . Obama wants to ban 'weapons of war' for Americans, use them to kill Americans

Rep. Gowdy's best point, though, was reminding us that the unelected (and indeed unnamed) officials deciding which Americans are to be assassinated could very well be the very same paragons of moral virtue who authorized "Project Gunwalker."

Foreign soil, domestic soil--does it matter? Fun with math and MAIG

"Mayors Against Illegal Guns" claims to have "over 800" members. Whether or not that number includes mayors who have quit when they found out what kind of fanatical, extremist organization they'd gotten hooked up with, mayors long dead whom MAIG claims have signed MAIG's petitions after their deaths, and mayors who never joined, but MAIG claims anyway, is left unanswered.

According to Wikipedia, there are about 30,000 incorporated cities in the U.S., and thus about 30,000 mayors. That means MAIG is claiming about 2.67% of U.S. mayors.

Meanwhile, at least 18 of MAIG's finest have been charged with (and some already convicted of) serious crimes, including assault, possessing child pornography, attempted child molestation, and ironically, breaking gun laws. That comes to about 2.25% of MAIG's membership.

In other words, the percentage of U.S. mayors participating in Bloomberg's forcible citizen disarmament jihad is only marginally higher than the percentage of MAIG members convicted of or charged with serious crimes.

And we're supposed to let them tell us what our rights are?

CSGV thinks that acknowledging purpose of Second Amendment is a 'gotcha moment'

Recently, has-been comedian Jim Carrey claimed that the lives of "assault rifle" buyers are not worth protecting. Senator Kirk wants to end gun trafficking to Chicago, unless BATFE does it

Interesting that Kirk would raise the issue of gun trafficking into Chicago as justification for yet another gun law. Interesting, because he seems not to have made so much as a peep about a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives scheme to deliberately "gunwalk" guns from Indiana to Chicago gangs.

Feinstein presumes to legislate limits on Constitutional rights

Never mind all that, though, because it's irrelevant. Laws do not, can not impose limits on the Constitution. The reality is precisely the opposite--the Constitution imposes limits on what laws are legitimate (although those limits have very rarely been enforced over many decades).

GOP, NRA may invent distinction between 'loopholes' at gun shows and away

This array of choices serve both the anti-gunners and the weak-kneed "allies" of gun rights advocates. The gun ban lobby wants the outright ban on private sales, but if that looks impossible, they'll take the still pretty big bite out of the apple that a gun show "loophole" closing bill represents (look for a legislative attack on the "internet gun sales 'loophole,'" as well). They know they can always come back for more next year, and the year after, etc., until they get it all.

Meanwhile, a flaccid GOP and NRA can claim "victory" (by virtue of having stopped the universal background check), despite gun shows (and maybe internet sales) having become vastly more heavily regulated. Note also that LaPierre, while laying down the fire and brimstone about universal background checks, also spent considerable time warning of the (very real) dangers of a national gun registry. Such a registry may not look particularly likely to pass any time soon, but by raising its menacing specter, he hopes to give gun rights advocates something else to cheer about when that threat is "defeated." Known 'gun criminal' David Gregory goes uncharged; life-saving hero may not

We are told in hysterical tones that the law so brazenly violated by David Gregory is absolutely essential to the safety of Americans (especially "the children"), but when he violates it, for cheap political theater, in an attempt to embarrass gun rights advocates, it is an outrage that prosecution was ever considered.

What if the federal government threw a 'gun control' party, and nobody came?

Do the states (and at least one county) have much hope of backing the feds down? That might seem unlikely, given this regime's passion for disarming the citizenry. The 'slippery slope' of 'gun control' is clearly very real, but not the point

We do not care if banning regime change rifles and "high capacity" magazines is as far down the slope as the gun prohibitionists want to go (and it isn't, anyway). Maintaining our access to these arms is worth the legal danger of defying such laws. If that defiance is met with the armed might of the government, it will be worth fighting and dying for--but even more worth killing for.

If we must make the slippery slope argument (and that argument does have some value--for pointing out to hunters who don't care about AR-15s that the next step will be banning their scoped bolt-action hunting rifles as scary "sniper rifles," for example), we need to stop pointing to a total, outright, confiscatory ban as the end point. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence would, of course, argue that the Native Americans who fought back so bravely, so futilely against their butchers were wrong to do so, because the government must have a monopoly on political violence.

What GOP and 'gun lobby' should be willing to yield: Absolutely nothing

'Magazine control' will be made irrelevant even sooner than 'gun control' will

While "printing" so-called "assault weapons" is not quite ready for prime time--but getting closer every day (see sidebar video)--printing effective magazines is even closer. Consumer grade 3-D printers currently operate with plastic, rather than metal, which poses some difficulties in manufacturing effective firearms. Magazines, on the other hand, are a different story. Soldiers and Marines in combat zones overseas have bought thousands of MagPul's plastic-bodied "PMAGs" with their own money, in preference to the government issued metal magazines. [More]

Americans aren't buying 'assault weapons' just to have something to register

People don't buy expensive (especially expensive now) gear just to have something to turn over to Feinstein when she finally gets to say, "Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in." The kind of American most likely to want AR-15s tends also to be the type least eager to register them with the government--particularly not a government agency as historically hostile to private gun ownership as is the BATFE (our "most hated federal agency," before "Project Gunwalker").

In other words, Feinstein proposes to make millions of new "gun criminals" out of decent Americans. So be it. How does she intend to arrest us, and whom does she propose do the arresting? [More]

Illinois house picks up senate's war on the armed citizenry

The third response to Muñoz's little quip is to point out that when the game one is "hunting" is an oath-breaking aspiring tyrant, perhaps riding in an armored limousine, rifles chambered for the .50 BMG cartridge can be just the ticket. Anti-gun United States Senator Dianne Feinstein and U.S. Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA, in both cases) are well aware of this, and frightened by it--and America is better off for their fear. IL Dems think 11-round magazines more dangerous than outdated nuclear plants

The first bill to get this treatment is Illinois House Bill 0815, which passed easily in the House back in May, by a 70-45-1 margin. What did HB 815 do, before Senator Dan Kotowski got hold of it yesterday? It dealt with nuclear power plant safety, requiring among other things that plant owners set aside money for improved monitoring and control gear. After Fukushima, that sounds like a pretty decent idea, does it not?

Not, apparently, to Sen. Kotowski. He believes that public safety in Illinois can better be served by banning 11-round and larger magazines, and imposing such a burdensome regulatory regime on shooting ranges as to make it economically unfeasible to operate them., so he introduced amendments to remove the nuclear safety language, and ban magazines and gun ranges. Feinstein's 'assault weapon' ban probably not gun grabbers' main effort

Feinstein's attempt to ban so-called "assault weapons" seems highly unlikely to pass, but that does not mean that the bill will fail to advance the forcible citizen disarmament lobby's agenda. If we the people allow our public servants to hide behind any ambiguity over our demand that shall not be infringed be treated as meaning what it says, we have no one to blame but ourselves. [More]
